The bake-off was inspired by our longtime neighbor Katherine Carter, who baked a legendary dessert that brought her the title of Ms. Rum Cake at the very first East Atlanta Strut.
Ms. Carter passed away at age 101, but her spirit, and her spirit-infused desserts, live on.
Notes for Bakers
The bake-off will take place in the East Atlanta Farmers Market lot (572 Stokeswood Ave SE, Atlanta, GA 30316).
Please arrive at 1:30 pm to set up your serving station. Rum must be the key ingredient in your bake to qualify you for prizes.
We will provide:
- A tent, table, tablecloth, voting jar for ticket-holders
- 2oz serving cups and small wooden spoons for the ticket-holders/voters.
- We will also take 3 larger portions for the official judges to taste.
You will provide:
- Your rum bake entry – you should use rum as an ingredient!
- A slicing/serving utensil for your bake
- An 8×10 or larger sign describing your bake (the name, ingredients, inspiration)
- A friend to help you portion the servings, schmooze with voters and provide moral support and hugs.
Please be prepared to provide at least 20 1oz-sized tastes plus 3 larger sized judges’ portions (think palm sized or a little larger) of your bake.
Three judges will make the final decision for first, second and third place winners. There will also be a prize for most popular bake among our ticket-holders.
Maybe you’re not a baker, but you like rum desserts.
Join us starting at 2 p.m. to become a taster at the contest and vote for your top three tastes. Tasting tickets are $15 and are payable by Venmo, Square or Paypal at the event. You will receive a wristband, a tasting spoon, three voting tokens and access to our sponsor’s area. Your tasting donation will go to a local nonprofit.
